Meet Sonali

Today my new "model"/AG doll arrived!

Her name is Sonali; technically she is one of the "best friends" of last year's "Girl of the Year", Chrissa. As she is retired/archived, it was a long search for one of her that didn't cost $130 or more, but I finally was able to purchase her from a board member on the American Girl Fans page at about the same price as I could have bought her from the catalog plus shipping. I'm so excited! :-D

In the AG book, Chrissa, Sonali starts out as a bully in school, but throughout the story realizes how wrong she was and begins to stand up against bullying instead.

But that's not my Sonali.

My Sonali is a sweet ten-year-old girl and is, at first, quiet and shy (in contrast to Rebecca's extremely excited and enthusiastic nature and Kirsten's "oldest-sister" outgoing personality). And yet, despite being shy, she has a huge heart for others and longs to reach out to people with the Gospel of Christ. Just as her dark skin, deep brown eyes, and gorgeous black hair reflect her Indian/Tamil heritage, so does her passion for winning souls reflect her Christian heritage. Her grandmother's life was impacted by the ministry of Amy Carmichael in India; now Sonali wishes to impact others the same way. One of the ways she'd like to do that is by writing. We'll have to see what she comes up with! :-)

Sonali's new family is making her feel very welcome. Kirsten, especially, as oldest sister, is helping her to get acquainted with things and people in her new home, and Rebecca is ever so excited to have a younger sister and teach her all she knows.

Sonali loves her new family and is also excited about her new job with the Dashwood Sisters Etsy Shop. She has already modeled an adorable, plaid corduroy "back-to-school" jumper!

Just Miscellaneous Happy Things :-)

Today I went to JoAnn Fabrics and was able to pick up some fun things for my "Etsy" sewing.

Let me show you some up-close shots of some of the items. I'm pretty happy with them! :-)

Iron-on applique for a doll-sized polo dress that I'll be making:

Decorative fabric roses to trim some Colonial-style doll dresses (I noticed several of Felicity's dresses are trimmed with fabric flowers, especially on the sleeves, so I followed suit :-) ).

Frog closures for a doll-sized Spencer jacket:

An awl for setting eyelets (unfortunately, the JoAnn's we went to doesn't carry eyelets so I may have to order them):

Two white-on-white prints:

They're not so bold as that, but I took the picture with flash so that you could see the difference in the prints. The one on top is for a Georgian/Colonial doll dress, the one on the bottom for a Regency doll dress.

Then I got home and found a lovely package in the mail for my dear sweet friend and sister in Christ, Leah!

And this was what was in the package:

That was so sweet of her! I LOVE Amy Carmichael and just devour anything I read of hers. Thank you so much for the book, Leah! I love it!! (((HUGS)))

Another happy thing--

A sneak peak of the dress I drafted some time back and sewed on Saturday. I need to get better color pictures before I list it on Etsy.

Now, one more happy thing:

I ordered a new "model"/"investment" for my Etsy shop! I'm debating whether I should show her to you or not. Shall it be a surprise when I get her, or should I tell you now? Hm...........

No, I won't tell you. You'll have to wait til she arrives! :-D

I Could Cry... :-(

With each order one makes, there is usually one thing that is misshapen, misformed, mistaken, or in need of a refund. :-(

But as the sisters/cousins were getting to know each other...

I realized Rebecca has one major defect.

See how her head is off-kilter and her one shoulder is lumpy, as though she had scholiosis? (Not to mention her shoes look battered, worse than my Kirsten shoes that I've had for 10 plus years, and her dress looked very poorly before I refastened it and straightened it out, and one side of her hair is losing its curl already! :-o)

Because Rebecca is for modeling for my shop, I need a perfectly formed body. I even tried on my newest Etsy item to see if she could get away with it, but it just doesn't work!
So I wrote in to American Girl to ask about either a refund or getting a new body for her.
I am SO sad! :-( I would hate to send her back, 'cause she and Kirsty were already getting to know each other and all! But I need a perfectly shaped doll for my shop! So I am waiting to hear back from American Girl. I'll let you know what I hear.

Investment Plans... ;-)

As I am about to embark on selling doll clothes, and as I have been attempting to model my doll dresses on my 12-year-old doll and Bethany's 8?-year-old doll (with broken legs), I have realized that it just can't be done. So when my CD comes due in February, I am planning on taking out a little money on an "investment" which will help me, Lord willing, in my sales.

The problem is, what will go into that investment?

One thing is definite, though the quantity of it is less certain.

Should I do one or two? With two, I could display Kirsten and my other investment in my room, and also use it to hold the dolls up for modeling instead of trying to balance them on their own.

As for my second investment.... don't laugh...
...I want get another doll. Not to play with-- stop laughing!-- this is an investment. I love Kirsten more than any other doll in the world, but she's my special friend, not a model, and her ratty hair and slightly pen-marked upper lip and other worn and used features will prove that. So I need to hire a younger doll to do my modeling. :-)

The question is, which one? I want one that can look contemporary for modern clothing and historical for historical clothing. Below are some of my ideas.

The new Rebecca doll. Isn't she just gorgeous? I absolutely love her looks, and while I don't know much about her story and anticipate that it is full of the usual attitudes against authority, sibling rivalry, and other not-that-great character traits, I do commend American Girl for creating a Jewish character! Judaism is an incomplete religion without Jesus Christ, definitely, and has really strayed from God, but the Jews are still God's chosen people and I think it's great that AG is supporting them.

Another idea is the Josefina doll. I have always loved Josefina's stories because, except for the fact that she is Catholic (which is mentioned seldom in the books), they are full of Biblical principles and even Scripture references, and they promote good character and family relationships, more, I think, than the other characters. Josefina isn't one of those rebellious characters who complains about her parents, grumbles about things not being fair, or sneaks behind authority's backs to do something she oughtn't be doing. At least, that I can remember. :-)
Besides that, Josefina is also a beautiful doll; I love her hair and eyes and skin tone and her dresses as well.

I know absolutely nothing about Ruthie (I've never even read the Kit books, only skimmed them) but the doll is very pretty and her dress is WAY cute! :-) I could probably use her for either historical or modern. Isn't she precious? :-)

I could also get some of the "Just Like You" dolls (though they wouldn't be just like me. ;-) )

This one is cute, though I don't know whether she could pass as historical even if I dressed her up. :-/ What do you think?

This girlie is ever so cute!! She looks a little bit like Ruthie except she has a different eye color and presentation dress. If I got her, I would call her Molly Gibson because she has curly dark brown hair. :-) She could pass for both modern and historical, I think.

Finally, AG is having a little "contest" for their new 2010 doll, Lanie. I'm not exactly interested in Lanie, but if I could get her for free, I definitely would use her!

What do you think I should do?

P.S. I forgot to mention, whatever I get I would like to pack away eventually to save for my little girl, if I ever have one! :-)

PRAYER REQUESTS

* That I would draw nearer to God every day and never allow my relationship to become stagnant ritual; particularly that I would grow in the area of submission, patience, 1 Corinthians 13 love, and wholehearted devotion

* That I might have wisdom as I edit "The Marquis' Daughter"; that the Lord would bless and work through it; and that I might find just the right publisher for it.

* That I would submit to the Lord's work in my life, whatever it may be; that I would take each opportunity He brings me (even the seemingly hard ones) to draw closer to Him and point others to Him

*That our Etsy shop might be successful and that it would be a means by which we can glorify God and share the Gospel
